W.I.N. Wellness is NOW Challenge
The My Community Wellness (W.I.N.) Wellness is Now Weight Loss Challenge continues through July 26.
The goal is to help people achieve their fitness goals by eating healthier foods and exercise. Many area businesses and organizations helped by allowing employees to participate as W.I.N. wellness ambassadors. Wellness ambassadors registered participants and weighed them periodically throughout the challenge to measure their progress.
The event is sponsored by Southern Tier Health Care System, Olean General Hospital, the ReHabilitation Center, and the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce. During the W.I.N. challenge, individuals and teams will compete to see who can lose the most weight by making healthy lifestyle changes.
Teams compete in five categories: couples; family (three or more); male (four members); female (four members); and co-ed (two male, two female). Four hundred dollars in Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce gift certificates will be awarded to the winners in each category except the family category. The winning family will receive $400 in Nintendo Wii products. The W.I.N. corporate sponsors paid for the prizes.
The team in each category with the greatest percentage body weight loss will win $400 in gift certificates. Everyone who participates will receive a My Community Wellness W.I.N. Weight Loss Challenge T-shirt at the second weigh-in. All weigh-ins will be submitted to the chamber to calculate weight loss.
Studies at the state and county level found that when compared to other areas of New York, Cattaraugus County residents exercise less and are more overweight, smoke more, drink more and eat less fruits and vegetables.
As a result, our families, friends and neighbors have some of the highest rates of chronic disease in Upstate New York. Poor overall community health impacts all our lives. People who suffer from chronic illness can't fully enjoy their life, family or community. High rates of chronic illness also drive up insurance costs for everyone.
