The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce Events and Activities Committee has set the events schedule for 2008. The first of events was the new Olean’s Mardi Gras, on Saturday, February 23rd. The event was held at the Old Library Restaurant from 8 PM – Midnight with an evening full of New Orlean’s cuisine, dancing, contests, and beads.
Spring is sprung at the Greater Olean Home and Garden Show April 18-20. The Home Show will be held at the William O. Smith Recreation Center in Olean. The Good News Awards Ceremony will be held Thursday, May 8. The dinner recognizes people who have gone above and beyond to make the Olean community a better place to live and work. The people are nominated by the community. Nomination forms will be accepted through March 7.
Back again by popular demand is the Community-Wide Garage Sale. The date has been set for May 17. Start cleaning your basements and attics! Wednesday, June 11th marks the Chamber’s annual kickoff to the summer season with the Chamber Clambake - always a good time with great food, games, music, and prizes - last year, the clambake had a record setting attendance of 739!
Two events — one weekend -- FARM CITY DAYS and the OLEAN PUBLIC AUCTION will be held in Olean August 1 and 2. Farm City Days ~ those days of sidewalk sales and entertainment in downtown Olean ~ was a success in 2007 and it will be back for 2008. Antiques, Furniture & Collectibles consignments for the 2nd Annual Olean Public Auction are wanted NOW for special advertising.
The Harleys will be back in town in August 15-17, for the sixth annual Rally in the Valley. This ‘roarin’ event has donated nearly $60,000 to several non-profit organizations in the area. The Taste of Olean and Art in the Park will be combined and held September 7, at the Olean campus of Jamestown Community College.
The Chamber’s Annual Dinner will be held on Thursday, November 6. The Dinner presents two separate award. The L.O.U.I.E award (Love of Olean United in Enterprise) is bestowed upon an individual who exemplifies the enterprising spirit of commercial growth and admiration for the greater Olean community, qualities which were embodied in the life of Louis Marra. The Enterprising Business Award is given to a privately-owned business which demonstrates a well-planned, thorough and serious approach to business development and exemplifies the unique “hometown” charm of the area in manners of administration, customer service and quality of product.
Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce ends the year with the festive 23rd Annual Santa Claus Lane Parade always held the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 28. The Parade is the traditional kick-off to the holiday season. Santa lights thousands of lights in Lincoln Park and downtown Olean when he parades through town in celebration.
“Specific details, vendor applications, participant registration forms will be found on GOACC’s website, www.oleanny.com, as the events develop. We encourage everyone to mark these dates on the calendar - we promise a fun-filled year of events!” states Mr. Sayegh.
