NO SPORTS EXPO in September

The Greater Olean Area Sports, Recreation and Fitness Expo planned for September 26, 27, 2020 has been canceled and will not be held in 2020. “Initially planned for May 30, 31 at Good Times Events Center, the expo was moved to the September date as GOACC moved its Home Show to the May dates. So the expo was a pinball being bounced around and finally COVID tilted this event too and it is canceled,” stated Meme K. Yanetsko, COO GOACC.

This event had initially been held in September ten years ago at the William O. Smith Recreation Center.  It then moved to January to Daniel Carter Events Center, moved again to Good Times, back to Daniel Carter through 2019.  The event committee decided to move it back to Good Times as well as to a new time frame of the month of May.  Holding it in May would have enabled GOACC to utilize Forness Pond and the fields around GTO, and to place vendors outside (pending good weather .) Even with the move to September for this year, the opportunities made available at GTO was great!

“The cancelation of the show was not due to low vendor attendance.  In fact, we had the most new vendors and more related to outdoor sports confirmed then we have had in the past,” added Mrs. Yanetsko.  She continued, “I was under the impression that events attendance was based on half of the maximum occupancy of the events center.  GTO at 300 maximum – this would mean 150 at anyone time on the show floor.  That guideline is for restaurant/food service.”  According to the Cattaraugus County Health Department / NYS Guidelines -- Under current guidance for Phase 4 no non-essential gatherings of more than 50 people.  All event venues are “specifically enumerated as non-essential.

“As far as the balance of 2020 for events, our Corporate Challenge 5K Run and Walk will be virtually held October 1-8th.  The rest of our schedule:  Allegheny River Running Fest 9/12; StrOlean 9/18, StrOlean 10/3; and the Santa Claus Lane Parade, November 27th are questionable.  We are awaiting word from Cattaraugus County Health Department,” reported Mrs. Yanetsko.  The Chamber’s Annual Dinner is scheduled for November 5th and would be under the host restaurant serving guidelines of half seating occupancy.

The safety and wellbeing for our event attendees, vendors, volunteers and staff is top priority for our events. As such, if we feel that we are unable to present a safe event, those events will be scaled back or postponed.   For more information, please contact GOACC by phone (716) 372-4433 or email.

Two GOACC Events Have Rescheduled Dates

OLEAN – Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce staff have officially rescheduled two of its vendor events.  The Olean Home Show originally set for April 24-26 will now be held May 29-31 at the William O. Smith Recreation Center, in Olean.  The Sports, Recreation, & Fitness Expo will be moved to September 26th and 27th and will be set at Good Times Events Center in Olean.

Meme Krahe Yanetsko, GOACC COO reported, “Our intentions were to continue as much as business as usual with any of our events at the Chamber until getting additional directives from NYS.  Although the Governor (NYS) hasn’t given the date to the end of April (stay home), we feel that it will be coming.”

With the moving of the Home Show to the dates of the Sports Expo, it was necessary to move that show as well.  “We feel that the Sports Expo works in May or September/October as we can still utilize the grounds surrounding the Good Times Center with equipment demos, fly fishing classes and the retriever training competition,” added Mrs. Yanetsko.

Mrs. Yanetsko is hoping that the balance of the GOACC Events Calendar will be able to occur with their original set dates. The next event, however, that could be affected is GOACC’s Gus Macker Basketball Tournament.  “At this time, Gus Macker National is rescheduling their early May events, but we are watching this closely as we need to have registrations and team fees in by end of May,” stated Mrs. Yanetsko.  Gus Macker Olean was moved from its normal August dates to encourage more participation with college and high school athletes with the new dates in 2020 of June 5-7.
On the vendor forefront for the Home Show, booths are still available.  GOACC encourages businesses that may have a downturn in business currently to look at vending at the home show.  “Business owners can reach many customers in the three day event, and their customers can see, touch, compare and buy your product,” stated Erica Dreher, GOACC Member Services Manager.  Comments from past vendors stated that this show is a consistent winner for them; creates many new customers/sales for the upcoming period; and receive many leads from the event.

Vendor fees range from $190 to $624 depending on size of booth for GOACC members.  “When the initial info went out to potential show vendors, there was a savings of $35 if paid in full,” reported Mrs. Dreher.  “We want our small businesses to survive this recession and help in any way possible.”  Payment options for home show vendors will be: pay in full by April 15 and save $35; a payment schedule can be created on each vendor scenario; and FREE booth for businesses that join the Chamber. The show dates and times are May 29, 5 PM to 9 PM, May 30, 10 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday, May 31, 10 AM to 4 PM.  For more information on the Home Show or other GOACC events and activities, please call GOACC at (716) 372-4433 or email member@oleanny.com.
