TASTE OF OLEAN CELEBRATES 30 YEARS IN 2020!
This year, the Taste of Olean, organized by the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce, celebrates its 30th event. It will be held Sunday, July 26th at War Veterans Park, Olean.
In honor of this occasion, the Chamber and the Tri-County Arts Council are hosting a design contest. It will be open to all school districts in the greater Olean area with their respective art departments. Anyone from grades K through 12 would be eligible to enter from school districts in Allegany, Hinsdale, Olean and Portville.
Information was sent to area school districts via their superintendents to their art departments in early January. Some of the design specs include and must be present: text stating both events Art in the Park and Taste of Olean and the year 2020.
The ten finalists will display their works at a reception to be held before the judging ends at the Tri-County Arts Council location. The winning design will be chosen mid-March 2020 and will be printed on posters and t-shirts for our 2020 event. The winner will receive one $50 Chamber Gift Certificate, one $50 Tri-County Arts Council gift certificate and t-shirts for their class room (up to 20 tees).
Submission guidelines and agreement are included with the contest information. Designs and registration forms must be submitted by midnight ET, Monday, March 16, 2020. For those families that may home school their children and interested in participating, please call GOACC. If you have any questions, please email or call the Olean Chamber at 716-372-4433.
Four and Half Hours of a Great Event!
A Taste of Olean 2019, presented by Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce, National Grid Co., the Chamber’s 47 Corporate Sponsors, was again a success at War Veterans Park. “There was a few rain drops as the event was setting up this morning, and then four and half glorious hours of fabulous food, magnificent music and artistic artisans. Napoli Pizza and Good Times / Hammer Back ran out of food around 3:15 p.m. Then the skies open and the rains came and continued. The Chamber notified many of the vendors of the incoming rains and then the event was going to continue. But most of the crowds dispated one the lightning and thunder came rolling in,” stated Erica Dreher, GOACC Membership Outreach Associate.
The Taste had 12 restaurants and beverage vendors, 5 participants in the Marketplace at the Taste; and the Art in the Park had 18 artists. The GOACC and its Taste of Olean Event Committee honored D.J. Butchello, John Cappelleti, and Larry Chiarenza with the 2019 Taste of Olean Hospitality Wall of Fame Awards. The Hospitality Wall of Fame recognized individuals and/or businesses who have made a significant contribution and given exceptional service to the food service/ hospitality industry in the past and who may continue to do so.
This year, GOACC invited a panel of judges to partake in a blind taste test. The judges included Casey Smith from The Mix 101.5/WMXO; Danni Lee from WPIG-FM, Mayor William Aiello, city of Olean and Jenny Brown with the Tri-County Arts Council. The winners of the Taste of Olean this year include: Tasters’s Choice for Overall Best Taste — the queso chicken bake created by the Future Chef’s Challenge winner, 3rd grader to be Liam Herne of the Olean City School District; the Taster’s Choice for Best Appetizer — Wonder Tots from Bub’s Grub food trailer; the Taster’s Choice for Best Taste Main Entrée — Steak Alfredo from Napoli Pizza; and the Taster’s Choice for Best Dessert — S’mores flavored Baklava from Ann Marie’s Homemade Baklava.
Art in the Park, sponsored by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council (CCAC) held in conjunction with the Taste, was a juried fine arts show showcasing the finest art in southwestern New York and northwestern Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Dreher added, “The initial concept for the Taste of Olean back in 1991 was for restaurants to give food samples of their favorites as well as a few new dishes that the restaurant wanted to introduce. The same concept is used today. Many taste goers haven’t ventured out to some of our new restaurants, so the Taste is ideal time to try those new places. Also, for our long steady restaurants, this is the time to introduce new dishes to get those customers back into your restaurant to try the full editions!”
The Chamber’s next two events are the new event, August 16th with strOLEAN and August 16-18 the 12th Annual Gus Macker Basketball tourney. For more information on the Chamber events, call Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce at 716-372-4433 or email.
