AND THE SURVEY SAYS – what event?
April 13, 2021
Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce is asking the community for input on its events – do you attend, what can we do to improve the event, if you don’t attend or haven’t in a while, why?   The survey asks about six of the Chambers 10 major events – Santa Claus Lane, Taste of Olean, Home Show, StrOlean, Corporate Challenge, Allegheny River Running Fest, and Gus Macker.

The survey (which can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Y5Y886D) will run through the end of April. GOACC will draw names for winners of $25 Shop Olean gift certificates. “We said names – as we will draw based on number of surveys (completed in full) submitted.  Get your friends to turn in complete surveys to boost the numbers. For every 50 surveys, we will draw one $25 winner – so 200 surveys completed? 4 winners!!!” stated Erica Dreher, GOACC Member Services Manager.

GOACC Unveils the Home Show Palooza for 2021
March 30, 2021
What is a Home Show Palooza 2021? The HSpalooza is a combo in person one day event and a virtual palooza of options to participate through online demos, live videos, a virtual guide and printed passport all showcasing our home show vendors. Home Show Palooza 2021 will be held in the Olean area May 14-27, 2021.

Meme K. Yanetsko, GOACC COO, reported, “As the entire world enters into a ‘new’ normal, Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce is presenting a new option for this year’s Home Show. GOACC is partnering with Olean Times Herald in the promotion efforts for our vendors.”  The normal route at the Olean Rec Center wasn’t an option as the numbers for inside large gatherings wouldn’t be conducive for our show.  A member committee/board member mentioned the pavilion in Lincoln Park as an option for a one-day show -- great idea!

Santa Isn’t Coming to Town, Grinch Says ??
November 10, 2020
Yes, Virginia there is a Santa, but he will not be making his annual trip to Olean this November, thanks—or no thanks—to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We tried our best to make it happen this year, but the size of the crowds we always attract and the number of individuals on floats in the parade made it impossible,” Meme Yanetsko, chief operating officer of the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce, said.  “Everyone we worked with—health officials, school personnel, law enforcement, our board—everyone wanted to continue the decades-old tradition of Santa Claus coming to Olean and lighting up Santa Claus Lane.  It’s just a logistical impossibility.”

SQUIRREL CHALLENGE
September 16, 2020
Worldwide there is a public art craze built around oversized fiberglass animal statues.  Olean joined communities across the United States when four-foot high fiberglass squirrels sprouted up along city streets in June 2007. Olean is now the home to 26 squirrels scampering around the city.  The Squirrel Challenge: A local family completed the squirrel hunt and wants to challenge other families and classes to go out and visit the squirrels. While visiting each squirrel the family was joined by Olean Police Department Sargent, Lance Edwards. The chamber also encourages the community to visit the Woodland in the City’s newest squirrel member located at Eaton’s Cooper Power Systems.

ANOTHER GOACC EVENT for COVID 2020 in the BOOKS
September 13, 2020
As mentioned in a news release last fall when GOACC’s event committee unveiled a revamped and newly polished events schedule for 2020, excitement was brewing with staff, board and the volunteers!  Then March 2020 came and one by one, GOACC’s events were plucked off that superb calendar list!

Even with the threat of upticks in positive cases for Western New York, the FIRST Allegheny River Running Fest was held Saturday, September 12th, at least the running with the fest tabled for next year.  Erica Dreher, Member Services Manager, reported, “The first ARRF had 124 participants!  Originally planned and budgeted for a total of 250 runners pre-Covid, that number represents a great accomplishment!”

Traffic Stoppages Along the ARRF Route
September 9, 2020
When the GOACC Board of Directors approved a new event for 2020, the event didn’t even have a name!  They okayed an (a yet to be named) event to be held Saturday, September 12.  It will be a half marathon and a BBQ food festival. At that same time in October 2019, the Events Committee set a budget with 150 participants, 100 running the 10K and 50 running the half.

Fast forward to September 2020, after months of planning and also months of worrying if this event would even be held, or not even hitting our budget participant numbers, the now named event Allegheny River Running Fest is a go!

SEVEN YEARS, No Eighth Year for Chamber OJT
July 29, 2020
OLEAN – On April 1, 2019, the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce was awarded its 39th training grant, $112,000 for employee training through the Chamber of Commerce On-The-Job Training (OJT) Program.  That program which ended March 31, 2020; was the final program since its renewal in April 2013 (7 straight years). OJT provided a 50% wage reimbursement during training for new employees.  The skill level of the job(s) determined the length of an OJT program.  With OJT, the paperwork was a simple, quick process and the reimbursement prompt.

GOACC staff begin paperwork / voucher process for its assumed new year in the first quarter 2020.  It was around May 2020 that GOACC received word from New York State Labor Department, “Labor training awards and re-appropriation information is still pending (nothing provided yet or funding approved). Right now the primary focus has been on unemployment insurance assistance.”

June 2020, GOACC received word from Senator George Borello’s office that the Chamber did in fact receive an award for OJT for the 2020/21 year – including in the NYS budget citation for Chamber OJT funding.

GOACC followed up last week to both DOL and the Senator’s office.  Meme K. Yanetsko, GOACC Chief Operating Officer stated, “The senator’s office found out that we aren’t funded for the 2020/21 — they were looking at a past year’s funding.  I asked them about restoring funds and when would that begin for GOACC to lobby senators.  The office stated to connect back with them in Dec/Jan in regards to 2021 year but stressed that 2021 doesn’t look too good but it’s always good to check in.”

GOACC administered On-the-Job Training Programs since 1977 to help companies reduce the cost of training new employees.  For the past year’s program, 2019/20, GOACC assisted 21 companies with 42 trainees gaining full-time employment.  The average training reimbursement to the companies was $2,667 with average trainee wage $16.34.

“GOACC’s experience in administering the program and the track record of placing our residents in full-time positions gave us an edge over the other Chambers across New York State.  GOACC was one of seven Chambers selected to receive the training award throughout the forty-years,” added Mrs. Yanetsko.  For more information, please contact GOACC at 372-4433, email info@oleanny.com or stop in at 301 North Union Street, Olean.
